Department of Economics

Economics subject was introduced in Mathabhanga College in 1969 and the honours course was started in 2000. Eminent faculty members of the Departments of Economics from the beginning are Prof. Anjana Basu, Prof. Satybrata Sengupta, Prof. Jugaratan Barman, Prof. Manjari Biswas and Dr Amit Kundu. Presently the department has only one faculty Prof. Aparna Biswas.

Programme Outcome

  • A degree in economics provides you with a solid foundation for a carrier in business, government or with the nonprofit organization. In this programme you will study how societies, governments, households and individuals create, use, manage and distribute resources.

Programme Specific Outcome

  • To equip students to succeed in an information rich, technology based society through ICT Literacy  
  • To help students understand content faster and better by improvement in teaching learning process  
  • To conduct adequate enrichment activities which will expose them to a variety of skilled careers and equip them with the tools and resources they need to build a future.

Course Outcomes

  • Understand the behavior of Indian and world economy.
  • To develop the financial literacy for profitable investment.
  • To make students aware of the issues of inflation, unemployment, poverty, GDP and Balance of payment.
  • It develops the skill to make better decisions in business environment and even in your personal choices.
  • To impart the knowledge of Banking, Marketing and different sections of economy so that students will get job opportunities in different economic, financial, banking, marketing and other sections of economy.
  • Economists are vital in helping, predict and study responses to changes in policy and market changes, which is an important skill in today’s changing business environment.
  • Economists also study and help in developing public policies like health care and educational reforms.

Special Lecture Arrangement: 

An online special lecture has been organized in the Department of Economics on the topic Rural Economy and Development on 17th July 2021 at 3 pm in the Google meet platform after prior notification given in the WhatsApp groups of different semesters of economics and also in the Facebook page. The resource person was Dr Sidhartha Sankar Laha, Associate Professor, Department of lifelong Learning and Extension, University of North Bengal. The programme was started with a short speech by Smt. Aparna Biswas, Associate professor of Economics. She explained the motto of organizing the special lecture and the logic that lies behind the selection of the topic. The welcome address was given by Dr Santanu Rout, the Teacher in charge of Mathabhanga College. Dr Gurucharan Das, the senior-most member of IQAC, Mathabhanga College describes some rural problems that we have been experiencing around our localities and also suggested some way out. Dr Sidhartha Sankar Laha, the main speaker, started his lecture by explaining the need for rural development. He nicely described different aspects of rural development and different programmes introduced by the govt. of India from time to time for the development of rural people by creating employment opportunities and reducing poverty.

Parents Teacher meeting:

Department of Economics organized a parent-Teacher meeting on 22nd July 2021 at 7.30 pm in Google meet platform after prior notification is given in each of the WhatsApp group of honours and programme courses of even semesters Smt. Aparna Biswas, Associate Professor of Economics, was the only teacher participant in the meeting as she is the only teaching staff in the department. The meeting was conducted by her. As the number of students of economics honours and programme course is not large, a single meeting was organized for the parents of all the students of honours and programme course.
