DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

 

The study of philosophy enhances your ability to evaluate and resolve problems. It will help you to analyze concepts, definitions, arguments, and problems. It contributes to your capacity to organize ideas and issues, to deal with questions of value, and to extract what is essential from masses of information. The Department of Philosophy, Mathabhanga College, was established in 1969. At the beginning Philosophy was inducted as program course and an honors course introduced subsequently in 2002. Presently the department has eight faculties, two Assistant Professor and six State Aided College Teacher.

Programme Outcome

Pursuing a career in philosophy can help you find employment as editors, copywriters, advertising managers, art directors, and marketing consultants. Pursuing a career in philosophy lies in its quality of being dynamic yet fundamental to the way life works, making it a popular subject choice amongst young students.  

Programme Specific Outcome

  • Understanding of the fundamental principles in Philosophy and methods in logical tradition (Indian & Western) and capability of developing ideas based on them.
  • Inculcate philosophical/logical reasoning.
  • Prepare and encourage students for research studies in Western and Indian Philosophy and other applied fields.
  • Provide advanced knowledge on topics in Philosophy, applied philosophy and human values empowering the students to pursue higher degrees at reputed academic institutions.
  • Strong foundation on critical thinking and representation of philosophical theories which have strong links and application in day-to-day life particularly practical ethics, tradition, culture, socio-political aspects of philosophy and cognitive sciences.

Course Outcome

  • To get an ability to search for the truth through thinking and speculation, about life and reality
  • Creates an ability to evaluate arguments and reasoning. Helps the Critical thinking as the process of evaluation to separate truth from falsehood, and reasonable from unreasonable belief itself.
  • To introduce with the philosophies of the ancient Greece that influenced much of Western culture
  • Gives the basic concept of Symbolic logic of Mathematical logic
  • It enables the students to know about thinking of the Western philosophers and their system buildings
  • To introduce with the general concepts of Ethics
  • Enables the students to know about the philosophical thinking of the great Indian thinkers about the human life and reality.
  • After the completion of this paper student will be able to know how we can see the religious viewpoints scientifically.
  • To know about social and political aspects of our society

PARENTS, TEACHERS MEETING

The Department held a Parent-Teachers meeting on 25th July 2021 to create a common platform so that the teachers can easily interact with the parents and students collectively an we have discussed the issues and hear grievances about the online classes during the pandemic.

SEMINAR AND WEBINARS

The Relevance Of The Philosophy And Ideology Of Swami Vivekananda In The Present Era

The Dept. of Philosophy, Mathabhanga College, Mathabhanga, Cooch Behar has organized ICPR Sponsored Periodical Lecture on “The Relevance Of The Philosophy And Ideology Of Swami Vivekananda In The Present Era” on 20th March 2018. The lecture was started at 11.30 A.M. and ended at 3.30 P.M. Near about 200 students, Teacher-in-charge, teaching and non teaching staff, ex. Students of Mathabhanga College, research scholars from different universities, teachers and students from other colleges have attended the lecture.

LOGIC AND ITS APPLICATION IN OUR FORMAL AND DAY TO DAY LIFE

A special lecture entitled, “LOGIC AND ITS APPLICATION IN OUR FORMAL AND DAY TO DAY LIFE” was organized by the Dept. of Philosophy, Mathabhanga College on 19th August, 2019 at 12.30PM to 4PM, under the guidance of IQAC, Mathabhanga College. The special lecture was inaugurated by Honorable Sir Dr. Kanti Lal Das Professor, Department of Philosophy, University of North Bengal, Dr. Debashish Dutta, Teacher-in Charge and Head, Department of Bengali, Mathabhanga College, Dr. Gurucharan. Das, Head of the Sanskrit Department, other Teachers and some Research Scholars from University of North Bengal and Gourbanga University.
