Department of Chemistry

The B.Sc course in Chemistry was started in 1994 and the department moved to the present building in 2016 under the able leadership of Dr. Manoj Majumdar. The Honours course was started in 2016. Owing to the untiring efforts of the eminent faculty department attained a formidable reputation in the North Bengal scene as one of the finest schools of chemistry for graduation.

The Department currently has one laboratory for undergraduates. The undergraduate laboratories have all the needed facilities like electronic balances (with accuracy 0.1 mg and 1 mg), fume hoods, digital potentiometer, digital conductometer, digital colorimeter, polarimeter, pH meter, melting point apparatus, air oven, etc.

Department of Chemistry

Programme Outcome

Students will demonstrate an understanding of major concepts in all disciplines of Chemistry. Students will employ critical thinking and the scientific method to design, carryout, record and analyze the results of chemical experiments and get an awareness of the impact of chemistry on the environment, society and cultures outside the specific community.

Programme Specific Outcome

  • The ability to explain chemical nomenclature, structure, reactivity and function in their specific field of chemistry
  • The design and execution of the experiment should demonstrate an understanding of good laboratory and the proper handling of chemical waste streams and also explain how the applications of Chemistry relates to the real world

Course Outcomes

  • Students will gain an understanding of methods of analysis related to chemical analysis goals such as detection of special elements,  functional group, derivatives, titration, gravitational method, potentiometry, PH metry, detection various physical and chemical data etc.
  •  After completing this course, students must have a basic knowledge of Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry.
  • Students will learn about Green Chemistry, Fuel Chemistry, Industrial and Analytical Chemistry.

To enable the students to learn about classification of polymers- methods of preparation of polymers, different types of polymerization, molecular weight of polymers.  Students to learn about electro chemistry.

Parents Teacher meeting

Parent-Teacher meeting for the session 2021-2022, arranged by the Department of Chemistry, Mathabhanga College was held on 21st July 2021 in the online Google-meet platform. In view of the ongoing pandemic situation, the meeting was conducted in online mode. Click here To View Details Report.

Representation of students in selected topics

With many college students across all degree programs taking some or all of their courses online these days, it’s imperative for students to know how to best present themselves virtually. This is particularly relevant when it comes to doing virtual presentations like PowerPoint slide shows and showcasing visual projects that might otherwise be presented in a traditional classroom setting. We provide the student freedom for such representation and some of the best presentations are included here.

Student Extra Curriculum Activity

Exhibition Participation

Chemistry department students participated actively in the Science exhibition program organized by Mathabhanga College to celebrate 50 years of its establishment. At least 10 students took part in live activities related to basic laboratory reactions. Some of the pictures are included here.

Seminar Attendance

We have always encouraged our students to take part in the seminar organized by Cochbehar Panchanan Barma University. Four of our students take part in the seminar organized by the Chemistry Department of CBPBU on 20-21 September 2019. Some pictures of the seminar are given below:

Poster Prsentation

6th Semester students of Mathabhanga College present a poster in  Science Academies' Lecture Workshop on Advance Learning of Chemical Sciences, organized by Chemistry Department Coochbehar Panchanan Barma University on 11th-12th March 2022. Poster was appreciated by honourable faculties across the country.

Teacher Days Celebration

In India, Teacher Days is celebrated on September 5 to mark the birthday of former President, scholar, philosopher, and Bharat Ratna recipient, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Across India, students honour and pay tribute to their teachers by sending Teachers Day greetings, quotes, messages, etc. For the last two years due to Corona Pandemic Chemistry Departmental Students have arranged the program on online mode:

Fresher Welcome Programme

The purpose of Fresher’s Party is to welcome new students in a friendly atmosphere and to encourage their creative impulses to boost their confidence. It is the day where seniors and juniors finally bond and unite to celebrate being part of the college. Students of First Year (batch:2021-222)- Chemistry Department students were welcomed with the red rose to this party which was organized by 6th and 4th students of Mathabhanga College Chemistry Department at 1PM. The program started with lamp lightening and inaugural speech by Honorable Teacher in Charge, Dr. Sulagna Dutta and followed by the HOD’s, Dr. Manoj Majumdar speech for the fresher’s. The program was hosted by Mr. Gopal Sarkar, student from 4th Semester B.Sc. Chemistry. The cake was cut by the TIC, the HOD and all the teachers and students of the Department. The welcome dance (Rabindra Nritoo) was performed by the Riya Bhoumik. Three students of Chemistry Departments Sri Raj Sutradhar, Syani Debnath and Riya Bhowmik was felicitated for their best paper representation in the national webinar jointly organized by Department of Chemistry and Physics on 12th January 2022.
